Letter from Timberline Fire Protection District Chief Ondr regarding Missouri Lakes Fire
As most of you are aware, there was a wildfire in the Missouri Lakes Subdivision on Wednesday, June 26th, at approximately 10:30 am. I wanted to take a few minutes to share my thoughts.
Bike Race, NedGravel, in Gilpin County on July 13, 2024
The bike race, NedGravel, is taking place Saturday, July 13. One of the five courses will take riders through Gilpin County - the rest will be in Boulder County around Nederland. While participants in the ride should be obeying rules of the road, please note the additional potential traffic and congestion during the hours of the ride which will be approximately 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Gilpin County Private Landowner Biodiversity Survey
CSU Extension Gilpin County and the NoCo Places Executive Committee are working with Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) to complete surveys in Gilpin County of the biodiversity of plants, insects, wildlife, moss, grasses, etc. The County pitched in a $15,000 match which helped CNHP obtain an over $7M GOCO state grant to survey throughout Colorado.

Forsythe II Prescribed Burn Updates, May 17-20, 2024

BOULDER, Colo. (May 20, 2024) -- Fire crews remain at the Forsythe II Prescribed Burn Project Site, and will continue their work for the next several days. These crews are working on securing the edge around the Unit 44A burn area by spraying water and stirring dirt to ensure lack of heat while also utilizing sprinklers to widen the perimeter line. City of Black Hawk Community Center Contribution Intergovernmental Agreement Update
The following letter was shared with Stephen Cole, City Manager for the City of Black Hawk on May 15, 2024
Dear Mr. Cole:
As you are aware, the Gilpin County Board of County Commissioners (“County”) received the City of Black Hawk’s (“City”) subsequent offer to provide a term-limited reoccurring direct contribution to support the Gilpin County Community Center, dated May 8, 2024. This followed the County’s request to start negotiations on the terms first shared with the County on March 21, 2024.
PUBLIC HEALTH NOTICE May 10, 2024 - Tularemia
- A dead beaver tested positive for tularemia near a private community lake on May 2, 2024.
- The infected animal has been removed and properly disposed of as of May 9, 2024.
- Although the last time an animal tested positive for tularemia in Gilpin County was in October 2019, it is possible that other animals have experienced illness or death without being detected.
- The bacteria that cause tularemia are endemic (native) to Colorado and Gilpin County. Under the right conditions it can persist for long periods of time in soil, water, or dead animals.
