Other Hazardous Waste
We have separate information on how to handle household hazardous materials and disposal options for refrigerators and freezers further on this page.
Some retailers will recycle the items that they sell (light bulbs, batteries, electronics, motor oil, etc.). Specialty disposal facilities are set up to handle household chemicals and other hazardous items such as insecticides, herbicides, rodent poisons, cleaners, paint thinners, solvents, and mercury thermometers which require special handling and disposal. A few options are linked below.
Most alkaline (disposable) batteries manufactured since 1996 are made of relatively nonhazardous materials and can be tossed directly into the trash. Home Depot Stores, Batteries Plus Bulbs Stores, and Rocky Mountain Battery are a few locations where you may be able to dispose of CFL bulbs, alkaline batteries, power tool batteries, rechargeable batteries, lead batteries, and more.
Appliances containing refrigerant must, by state law, have this gas removed by a company licensed to do so before recycling or disposal. There will be a fee for removal.
Here are some locations that will remove the refrigerant gas and dispose of these appliances (Please call to confirm): Also see rebates from your electric company.

A current Gilpin County Resident window sticker, affixed to the driver’s side of the windshield of the vehicle, is the preferred method to prove residency in Gilpin County at the trash transfer station and slash site. Window stickers
are mailed with your vehicle registrations, or can be picked up at the Clerk and Recorder’s office in the Gilpin County Courthouse in Central City.
Property tax notices from Gilpin County, or a property report from the Gilpin County Assessor’s website can be acceptable proof of property ownership in the County. The name on the property notices must match the driver’s license of the person presenting it. See below for how to print a property report.
Vehicle registration notices from Gilpin County, utility bills or mail with an in-county physical address are accepted if the name on the document matches the driver’s license of the person presenting it.
Note: Property owners are eligible for free use of the Gilpin County Slash Site, and for resident rates at the trash transfer station, even if their primary residence is outside of Gilpin County.
To print a property report:
- Navigate to the Property Record Database linked on the Gilpin County website off the Assessor's page.
- Find your property either by Address or by Owner Name.
- Choose your property, and click on Print Property Report.
- Print the 1st page of the Property Report.
- If the Property Owner Address matches the address on the driver’s license of the person delivering the load (in state OR out of state), this will be adequate proof of ownership.
