The Colorado Assembly had been contemplating suspending the Senior and Veteran’s Exemptions in 2020 due to the pandemic. They were, and are, seeking ways to fill the huge losses in the state’s economy.

Our Gilpin County Commissioners, along with a substantial number of County Commissioners from across the state, wrote letters to their respective legislators, and the bill sponsors, expressing their opposition to suspending the exemptions.

Fortunately for all our Seniors and Veterans, the exemptions have not been suspended for 2020!

New Senior Exemption applications continue being accepted for those who turned 65 before January 1, 2020 and their Gilpin County home has been their primary residence for at least 10 years prior to January 1, 2020. The Senior Exemption application deadline is July 15, 2020. Once approved, the qualifying owner does not need to apply again Each year we receive a large number of applications and they have not slowed down in 2020! Please contact Anne Schafer for details about the Veteran Exemption.

Every year the details about the Senior & Veterans Exemptions are on the back of each property owners tax bill/invoice. Annually, we also put out a press release the first week of January; this year it was in the January 3, 2020 edition of the Weekly Register Call. The release, with all the details (minus the Veterans information, whose deadline is July 1, 2020) will also appear in the upcoming July 2, 2020 edition.
