The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is exploring a new initiative to enhance transportation options in the central Rocky Mountains. The plan involves developing a rail line that connects the mountain towns and regions with urban centers and recreational locations. This project aims to use existing rail infrastructure to meet the growing demand for passenger rail service.
There is currently no funding for mountain rail but there are two funding sources, oil & gas production fees and rental cars fees, which will feed a surface transportation fund starting in the next two years. Mountain rail is a long-range consideration to tie in front range passenger rail with expanded rail in NW Colorado.
