Xcel Energy is re-energizing the power lines for the cities of Central and Black Hawk and power is being restored incrementally. Crews are still working. United Power has been working throughout the day to reenergize all customers in Gilpin County. No estimated time of complete restoration has been provided by either utility.
As of 4:30 on Saturday, 12/20, 99 residents have taken advantage of the shelter. This includes people seeking showers, charging facilities, snacks and food, emergency water, and staying overnight. The shelter will remain open through the morning. Early Sunday morning, the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management will reassess the need to remain open. Further information will be posted after the decision is made.
❤️ Community Gratitude & Appreciation ❤️
In times of challenge, our community shines—and this week was a powerful reminder of that.
During the recent windstorm that caused widespread power outages across Gilpin County, the American Red Cross stepped up without hesitation. Within one hour of the Gilpin County Office of Emergency Management requesting assistance, the Red Cross had plans in motion and a fully staffed shelter open by 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 12/17/2025. Their speed, professionalism, and compassion ensured our residents had a safe, warm place when it mattered most.
Hats off to the Gilpin County Sheriff's Office, who have provided continuous security at the shelter since it opened—offering peace of mind and steadfast support for those seeking assistance.
To everyone who worked behind the scenes and on the front lines: thank you for your dedication, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to our community. Gilpin County is stronger because of you. 💙
🚧📡 Behind the Scenes Heroes 📡🚧
While first responders were out front keeping our community safe during the extreme wind event and power outages, another critical team was hard at work behind the scenes.
A huge THANK YOU to our Public Works Department, who battled dangerous conditions to clear road access and ensure the county radio repeater remained operational. Their efforts kept communication lines open when they were needed most — a vital piece of keeping everyone safe.
We appreciate the dedication, teamwork, and long hours that often go unseen. This work truly made a difference. 💙👏
