Xcel Energy has launched a new Colorado PSPS Battery Rebate Program to support customers who rely on electricity-powered medical equipment and live in areas with elevated wildfire risk.

Eligible customers may receive up to $10,000 toward the purchase and installation of a home Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

Why This Matters

In areas with medium and high wildfire risk, Xcel Energy may temporarily shut off power during extreme fire conditions to reduce wildfire danger. These temporary outages are called Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).

For households that depend on electricity to operate medical equipment, power interruptions can pose serious challenges. A home battery system can provide backup power during a PSPS event, giving families more time to make safe arrangements.

Who Is Eligible?

Customers may qualify if all of the following apply:

  • You are an Xcel Energy residential electric customer in Colorado

  • You are enrolled in Xcel Energy’s Medical Certification Program or Colorado Medical Exemption Program

    • Enrollment requires verification and signature from a licensed health care provider

  • You live in a Tier 2 or Tier 3 wildfire risk zone

Residents can check their wildfire risk zone on Xcel's website.

👉 How the Rebate Process Works

  1. Contact a local battery installer for a quote and site visit.

  2. The installer submits an Interconnection Application to Xcel Energy.

  3. The customer signs required program agreements.

  4. The battery can be installed while the application is under review.

  5. The installer coordinates the required county electrical inspection.

  6. Xcel Energy issues a “Permission to Operate” email.

  7. The rebate check is mailed within 4–6 weeks after approval.

Important Note

Funding for this rebate program is limited. Xcel Energy is directly contacting eligible customers through email, phone calls, text messages, and mail.

If you or someone in your household relies on medical equipment and lives in a higher wildfire risk zone, this program may provide important backup power support.
